Calling out across the mountain mist, the flash of firey colour beneath their wings contrasts with the extreme cold and harsh habitat kea calls home.

My favorite bird, The kea is a species of large parrot in the family Nestoridae found in the forested and alpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand.

Kea are notably recognized as the most intelligent bird in the world, and the world’s only alpine parrot.

They are unusual in the way they actively seek out and interact with humans and man made items. Sadly Curiosity is killing the kea, recently joining the endangered species list, where once they were deemed a nuisance, now they are rare.
